Federal Shutdown Information: SNAP, MFIP, and WIC

Southwest Health and Human Services is closely monitoring updates from the State of Minnesota and federal agencies, and we’ll share new information as soon as it becomes available.

At this time:

  • On Friday, Oct. 31, a federal court issued an order requiring the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to use a contingency fund of $5 billion to provide SNAP benefits nationwide. In response to the order, the USDA said today that they will use the contingency funds, but that the amount only covers about half of the normal benefits.
  • These funds have not yet been released to the states. We do not know when funds will become available, or how much funding will be available per SNAP recipient. We are awaiting further guidance from USDA, but we are hopeful to provide at least partial SNAP and MFIP food benefits in November.
  • Households may continue to use benefits that are on their card through the duration of the shutdown.
  • Applications may continue to be processed

✅ WIC services and benefits continue as normal.

✅ SNAP & MFIP: Please make sure your contact information is up to date with the county so you can receive any messages about your case. Applications will still be accepted.
